AMNIOTIC FLUID VOLUME:
Use maximum vertical pocket (MVP) preferentially as quantification for amniotic fluid volume. Normal amniotic fluid volume corresponds to an MVP between 2 – 8 centimeters. Oligohydramnios corresponds to an MVP less than 2.0 centimeters. In these situations, only the MVP shall be reported.
If the MVP is >8 cm, an amniotic fluid volume (AFI) is then obtained to confirm if polyhydramnios is present (>25 cm). If normal AFI, report the value of the AFI. I have instructed the sonographers to continue getting both measurements but the Radiologist should report the MVP or AFI appropriate for the volume calculated.
